Industry Analyst Profile:
Based in Munich, Ruediger Spies focuses as BARC Research Fellow / Analyst (@Barc) on developments and trends in the information agenda (e.g., BI/BA, Big Data, content management, knowledge worker environments, AI, Cognitive Computing, Machine & Deep Learning, etc.), as well as in the extended enterprise applications market (e.g., ERP, CRM, …), related infrastructure and hardware architectures and delivery models (e.g., Cloud Computing/SOA/SaaS/IaaS, Mobility, …), intellectual property management, and open source. In this role, Spies provides strategic advice to both the IT vendor and end-user communities, as a frequent interview partner for journalist (press and TV) and regular keynote speaker at conferences and events.
Before joining BARC, Spies was Research Fellow & Senior Analyst for CRISP Research, Ind. Vice President Software Markets with CXP / PAC, Ind. Vice President Enterprise Applications with IDC, as well as an Senior Analyst/Executive Advisor with Experton Group. Prior to this, he was Vice President Enterprise Applications, global lead SAP analyst, and territory lead analyst for Central and Eastern Europe at META Group Inc.
Spies has gained extensive experience in over 40 years in the management of international enterprises, as well as in the field of cutting edge technology and innovations, where he concentrated mainly on the enterprise applications and infrastructure market. That also includes hardware (server and mobile devices) and communication technologies. In addition, Spies has detailed strategic know-how in IT/business alignment, project organization/management, and quality management. He has also worked for EDS/A.T. Kearney, Informix, and IBM in Germany, France, England (European Headquarters), and the U.S., as well as GEI, which today is technology consulting company of T-Systems.
Spies has built a reputation as being one of the most influential IT opinion makers in Germany (elected 2001 and 2011 as one of the 100 most influencial IT people by CIO/CW/IDG –> Click), has published countless professional articles, and is a frequent speaker at conferences and conventions. Spies studied physics at the University of Hamburg and electrical engineering at the University of Aachen (degree: Diplomphysiker = Master of Physics). He also qualified as Patent Attorney (German and European) and has the legal degree of a Master of Intellectual Property Law and Management / LL.M. from the Centre d’Études International de la Propriété Intellectuelle, Strasbourg/France.
